Kunihiko Morinaga: Fashion Invitation

Kunihiko Morinaga is known for his fashion design around the world. His 8-Bit Fashion collection was a breakthrough collection. The way how he implemented pixel art that was used for game design more than 30 years ago to the real world is something else.

Concept

Pixel art is the first type of digital art that came into the world. It was used solely for game development and Kunihiko Morinaga wanted to use the opposite approach to show that everything in this world is connected and works together. What defines pixel art is its unique visual style, where individual pixels serve as the building blocks that make up the image. The effect is a visual style very similar to mosaic art, cross-stitch, and other types of embroidery techniques.

Theme

Pixel art, as a form of creating a bigger picture out of small details, was born in the 1970s, when computers and digital art started to gain relevance and, as you can guess, it is based on pixels. For those familiar with the term, but unfamiliar with its graphic characteristics, a pixel is like a cell in a living organism - it is the most basic structural unit of a digital image (and hence the name: picture + element = pixel).

Material

The fashion show mail invitation has red, black, and grey colors as the main color palette. Each detail of this project represents the style of the fashion collection to give a sense that you are holding a piece of art itself. The envelope of the invitation has a die cut patter on the opening as well as a sleeve with die cuts and foil underneath it. On the back of the invitation, it has the RSVP envelope and card that have the same approach as the main envelope.

“We challenge ourselves, our clients, and convention…”
